Why I read Indrajal Comics?

Why I read Indrajal Comics? Is it just for fun or get something more out of it?

Times of India stop publishing IJC in 1990. After Twenty Years, I saw person who born after stopping IJC also interested in those comics and spend huge money for collecting Indrajal comics.

Recently in old book markets of collage streets I asked few booksellers about IJCs. They told me earlier
issues are very rare now and almost impossible to found and become very expensive too. It’s just like antique books.

I saw at “mumbai.olx.in” someone like to sale his IJC, issues before the serial number 300 at Rs 1000/- a piece. Interested person can search it from Google and find more ad like that.

So Indrajal comics are not only comics but“antique” now.
It’s become more popular and valuable but to me it's always the same old friend as before.
I start to read in my childhood and after more than forty years still I read Indrajal comics.

Why?
Why I read books?

I read books to know to learn, I read books for pleasure, and I read when I am in sorrow in pain in happiness, read when I feel fear, feel discourage, read for strength to help myself, I read to find a way for my life, I read to find hope.

I like to read my favorite books repeatedly, just like classical songs and music or super oldies which are never getting old.

I knew the story; also know how it ends up but still I read and each time I read, I get something new from it.Good books are just like a unique artwork or painting which on the wall for several years and never becomes tiresome.

But can I say everything for Indrajal Comics? It's a simple comic book, fantasy, and fantasy is meaningless because it’s not about real people or real world.

It never happening in our real life, there is no Denkali or Phantom...

or magician like Mandrake who can very easily defeat any criminals.

Comics are not like other serious books.
Yes, Indrajal Comics is not like serious books but it has something of its own which I never learn so easily form other books.

I learn something from Indrajal Comics in my childhood.

My kid has sometimes described to me how he became afraid to be alone anywhere in dark. We don’t live in a big house but he does not like to go bathroom alone in the night. Sometimes my son asked, “Baba, don’t you fear anything? How you became so brave?”
I asked, "Do you know what bravery is?” and I told my son, it is "being afraid and going ahead anyhow.”

I learn it from Indrajal Comics when I was a kid.

I always noticed that Phantom fears nothing, I tried to be brave like The Phantom in my childhood, but I found out that being brave was not that easy. Then I read that issue where bravery was described as "being afraid and going ahead anyhow.” That was a lesson I remembered throughout my whole life.

The issue was 056 Birer Shiksha (Eng. 078 - The Kidnappers)

So what I told my son was from an Indrajal Comics and and maybe he also remember it.
Its very simple but effective.

Do you ever feel disappointed or defeated in your life? And sometimes you feel like you don't have the strength to overcome it.

In my life as an artist sometimes I feel pain, I feel myself defeated but I overcome it very soon because I know...
“No man is beat till he admits it.” I know the meaning of this line.

I also collect those encouraging words from an old Indrajal comics. It was 013 Robin Hood (Eng.035 - Robin Hood).
In an archery contest Robin Hood hit the center of the target and told his father (who is also a
competitor)”Forgive me Sir,..I’ve robbed you of a chance to win.”His father reply,

If you don't admit your defeat no one can defeat you. If you have courage your win will be only a matter of time.
Also very simple words but these words can inspire us to reach higher...

And that’s why I read Indrajal Comics. I always feel like I've learned something very important from it.

Maybe you tell me something more about why you read Indrajal Comics.

  1. Enjoyed your writeup linking comics to everyday life, right from childhood. Its these memories which means a lot, which were shaped by our untruly love towards IJC.

I missed collecting IJC, when they were available for throwaway price, and now don't think the rate at which it's selling is in my allowed budget.

Nevertheless, it's so good to see them in such digital form, with better clarity, and puts those knowledge of missing the hard copy ones, at least in the backburner.

Thanks Betal, and continue your rundown.

Yours are the posts which satisfy the urge of talking about the book and Indrajal comics.
Well, why do i read Indrajal comics!if i think about it then the answer is simple and that is because of Phantom,Mandrake,Bahadur and Flash Gordon. It was because of Phantom(Vetal) which introduced me to Indrajal comics in early 80's and after which i got addicted to this weekly schedule series, and after 30 years i still read them again and again without being bored,i believe i shall be reading them in the same fashion throughout the rest of my life.

  6. @Comic World: Thank you friend, I can quote from you: "your supporting comments also satisfy the urge of talking about the books and Indrajal Comics".
Thanks for such a inspirational words.

I think of those authors who were created our wonderful childhood heroes. How imaginative they are and what a variety in their plots that after reading several times never feel it's boring.

What's the magic in their creation.

  7. Yeah, true, those creators and specially Lee Falk's creativity is simply unmatched in every respect, his story telling art in form of illustrative pictures is a example of sheer genius and specially God gifted talent.Read out any of his Phantom/Mandrake story and you can't get bored reading it irrespective of its frequency.

  9. @Comic World: Lee Falk told his stories masterly with popular story lines like invisibility(Mandrake),creature from outer space(Phantom, Mandrake),Overcoming the Monster or giant(Phantom, Mandrake) but also add some unique ideas which are unparalleled.

In a movie "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" I saw a person creates perfumes and with it he powerfully manipulate human emotions, it remind me of "The Drummer of Timpenni” Eng. 105 and in Ben. 083 published in March 1st 1970 a person also have the ability to control listener’s emotions or actions with his magic drum.

But above all Moral values play vital roles in Lee Falk's stories. Phantom and Mandrake never killed anybody directly even animals except to save someone. Phantom like to shot to the guns, and Mandrake turns the guns in to flowers (how Peaceful).

I wish if I could manage a post about Lee Falk's plot in IJC in future.

    Thanks again comic world.

  10. @Walker:Thanks Walker, You present lovely an example. Yes in phantom is chained he waited until the chain is weak and he proved will power and patience is the only power by which one can achieve anything.

  11. @ Betal: Please do write on Lee Falk's magic on IJC.

I tried writing two posts dedicating to Falk's creations of Mandrake and Phantom. over here:

    http://www.comicology.in/2009/08/muthu-comics-312-mandrake-aug-09.html
    http://www.comicology.in/2009/04/lee-falks-phantom-1-origins-of-ghost.html

There are still some parts which are left, which I am hoping to cover as soon as I get some more time to spend on the fact finding stuffs.

It will be good to read your side take on Falk's brilliance.

By the way, I am yet to respond to your mail, which I will do this week. Just caught up with work and stuffs :( :)

  13. True,Lee Falk created two universal character equally popular everywhere. If we closely examine Phantom then he is a perfect Indian role model having all those qualities which we Indians adore. For eg.Phantom is a complete teetotaler, strictly one woman man, never kills anybody, always ready to fight for justice, never abuses or mouths foul words,a loving and caring father, honest, brave and just and above all he is a common human without any imaginary super powers due to which a common man identifies himself with Phantom more rather than with any other so called super heroes.
Yes,music possesses the power to control human emotions and feelings, remember our own 'Tansen' who use to mesmerize humans and animals through his music.
'Drummers of Timpeni' is among one of the best Phantom classics,i hope, will be discussing this story in detail someday.
Will wait your write up over Falk.

  14. Welcome again Comic World, Drummers of Timpeni’ is one of my favorite IJC.

The power of music is well known. Different sorts of music, can influence the brain in different ways, not only affect the human mind, but it can influence plants and animals as well.
Albert Einstein said about his famous, equations and theories, “It occurred to me by intuition, and music was the driving force behind that intuition. My discovery was the result of musical perception”

    So music is undoubtedly powerful.

Your writing skill is excellent and very authentic; if you write about the plot of “Drummers of Timpeni” sure it will be a pleasant experience to read.
    Thank you.

  15. Yes, there are lot of memories related with these IJC. It's colour & relatively stronger story line had leaved such a deep impact impact, today fans are searching and it being sold at rate of gold. However max price I paid for some @30rs only. At this rate better I'll print myself at home and send some money to artist family.

I'm strongly against to pay such price, although can effort. Paying such price we are encouraging black market. Does the artists & the publishers are getting a single penny?

Also surprise about charges of King Features Syndicate. Getting nothing & many hardcore fans are forced to pay too high. (:

  16. Thank you prabhat, Our Increasing demand pushes the prices up. I am agreeing with you Prabhat, this is not fare.

In early 70s I paid 30-35 paise for a IJC and in 90 it was Rs. 5-6 for a rare one (below 50 and I purchased #1 Bengali then) now I can offer them for a rare one Rs.30-35 not more.
But persons are there who can give them double or triple, so why don’t they demand more?

In that case I must say I no need any more IJCs, but never give them more prices even for a rare one.

Frequent query of particular item any bookseller can think that they have very precious item so why don’t manage few more bucks out of it.
If we fulfill their demand we also encouraging them demanding more prices next time.

So, it is not the booksellers but us who increased the price.

Thanks again for your valuable comment.
