Which Issue of Bengali IJC is this?

This page from indrajal comics’ No. 022 published in December 1965.
In Bengali? Surprised?
We all know Bengali IJC started from 1966 January. How can it possible Bengali IJC in 1965?
It is indrajal of course but it was never publish in Bengali. It was just before the issue 001, Lal Jadukarir Rahasya. Yes, 022, A String Of Black Pearls.
Before Times of India decide to publish IJC in Bengali, there were 22 issues already published. Some of them repeated later with different name and slightly change in frames but the story was same.
Some of the repeated version was The Phantom's Ring as The Magnificent Emblem, Moogoo's Doll as The Valley of the Living Dead, The Man Eating Plant as The Legend of the Massau Deity and few more. At the same time, we got it in Bengali.
However, 001 Phantom's Belt to 004 The Impostor and 008-The_Playmate, 011 - Phantom's Treasure, 014 - The Mystery Of The Rattle, 016-Phantom-The Diamond Cup , 018-Phantom-The Golden Princess, 021 - King Pepe's Bride 022- A sting of black pearls as far as I know never published in Bengali.
I decide to translate all those issues in Bengali. I started with A sting of black pearls because I do not have any other issues except this one. So I decide to start with this and (if I collect other issues) finish with 001.
If anyone can help me to collect these books I'd really appreciate it.
Complete translated version of “A string of black pearls” as” Kolo Mukatar Konthohar” I will post soon when I finished with it. Of course with cover (but without advertisement, I do not want to translate it).

Now, here is Mandrake the magician. This is my first posting of Mandrake IJC.
028 Kalo Jadukar. He is not alone, a nice Phantom story also with it. Name is a little long “Betaler Rajattye Jharfunk Achal”
028 Kalo Jadukar

  1. Super Betal Da!

You continue surprising us with unique presentation. However I'll request to translate all 22 IJC as some panels may differ.

Can you give me hints about PS steps in short. May be your method is better than I know.

If you can wait, pls start with #1 translated. New HR version is coming soon. Agree about ad. pages, but pls don't miss other comics pages. Many HR versions (2 to 22), I'll send you in 1-2 days. A little busy.

If there will be possibility to get such books, pls keep in mind about 2nd copy for me too. :) From Feb 2010 I restarted collecting IJC after a break of 20 years.

I think it'll be not easy to get original early issues. Or someone will ask VERY good amount.

So, there is alternative variant. May be later we can print all early issues together. Someone was telling 1 page costs 10rs. Think, the printing cost we can cut sharply. Let me visit India, I'll check with my professional friends of this field.

Thank you for another rare gem! People like you are example. You are not only gifting rare issues, but providing very interesting IJC article.

  2. Welcome Prabhat, and many thanks to you
    For your nice comment..
Request for all 22 issues, it encourage me a lot…
Sending me earlier issue in HR (many thanks)…
Welcome and thanks for coming India…

For comic books, Hand script is best and may be the only one. Hand scrip matched with comic frames and can express every action properly. “BOOM, Balm, Bam! BAM!” Speed of handwriting makes those words very action full. With regular type font, lost all the dramatic looks of a comic page, lost its dynamic appearance.

IJC never printed in type font, always written in the hand script with every language.

At first, I do not think about type font. Hand script was my plan. I am not a regular hand scriptwriter; hardly write one or two lines for advertisement or book covers. With my professional pressure, it will be a time taking project for me to translate with hand script. Therefore, I did it in this way. I am not satisfied with how it looks now, but if I have to do with many issues, I have to think a simple way.

I am also always searching for early issues even which are already I have. I grew up with those books. I never want to lose a single one. They are not just comic books to me. They are my past; my memories, still my friend, and the bring more friends to me.

If you want it with digital print may be it will cost more. I never think of it. When I print for my artwork, it cost Rs.16 for single side. In bulk print, it will cost less. I

Thanks again Prabhat, thanks for everything.

  5. Great effort Betal. This will be great effort. I am getting inspired with your work. You have rightly said that these IJC prints were with Hand Script. So, type font can never give the same feel. But, many hand script or at least close to it is available in Bengali now. You can try them. Let me experiment with all the fonts available with me. If I can find any better replacement, I will tell you. In the meantime, do not delete your .psd files. So that if a better font is available, you can change without much effort.

    Thanks for your effort anyway.

  6. Thanks for an interesting article about the earliest form of Bengali IJC, Betal. I guess no one was aware of such an existence until now.

Also your plan for translating the first 22 titles in Hindi, is indeed a great effort. Even if it not handtypefaced, the joy of reading an international comic in your regional lang is unmatched.

Keep up the good work and thanks for the share.

  7. A small thing. Page 17 of the ist IJC, Lal Jadukorir Rohossyo, is missing. Can you please post it? Without it the issue will not be complete.

  9. @Devil:Thank you Devil. You like my idea. I already tried with some Bengali script. If you find any better one sure it will help me. Er jannye tomake many thanks.

English fonts are richer than Bengali but in any good comics type font are never used. As you said, the uniform look of font ruins everything.

Again thanks you devil. You noticed the missing page. Somehow, I missed the scan. Sure, I will post it here with its all-28 pages. About two or three pages, I brought it from Collage Street only few years ago. First two pages merge inner side. If I scan again, I cannot show you what inside the merge portion.

Thanks again for have me the chance to post 1st Bengali issue here with complete form.

  10. @Rafiq Raja: thank you very much. In translate version it is not important how an exact word to word it was but how close with ‘source text’ also enriched with ‘target text’.
Actually, I want to translate those issues in Bengali. Even so, you are right nothing compared with reading our favorite book in own language.
    Thanks again.

  17. About using "other's" scans, being a old member of this Indrajal-blogging(since '07),I can assure you that no scan IS somebody's right, and so everybody is free to use, until & unless,of course, you don't mention your source!

For further details, you can ask Prabhat(of PBC blog) as we know that it's pretty ok(using present scans) specially when you doing a great n unique job!:-)

  19. I already asked Prabhat, and maybe you noticed in first comment he assured me sending #2 to #22, but still #1 is missing.

Actually before posting this, I talked first to Prabaht about my idea. He also encourages me to do that.

Thanks prabhat,,I know collecting all those issue with HQ is not easy, so take your time and send me when you feel free.

  20. @MaNdrAke dudE: Even soon Ranjan Da will have #1 also. Even before we came to know about his plans, requested 2 persons, both promised to help. So ..... :)) It's absolutely real.

What to take others. Our team has all. Ranjan Da is nice person, we'll bring to him best possible scans. Some in English, some in Hindi. To translate English version could be used and for replacing texts Hindi are also fine.
